The Box

Obsession: a persistent preoccupation, idea, or feeling. Hi, my name is Gina and I am an obsessive person, in all aspects (and also compulsive! a wonderful combo don’t you think ?) To be an obsessive person has become something I love and hate about my personality (yes, all at the same time); it has made me do and say things I deeply regret, but also has made me achieve things I never thought would happen. I consider myself a very determined person, I do not rest (literally) until I get something I want ... I think, on one hand it’s a positive ‘quality’ but sometimes it can blind you to the point of being stubborn and foolish, there is a fine line between achieving goals and loosing your mind into something nonsense. Obsessions are responsible of hours of anguish and frustration, non-sleep nights, but at the same time they are great engines to achieve things.

What’s your personal meaning of happiness? To get, to have, to do? or all three together... for me, happiness is a state of peace and balance by 'doing' and working; to achieve personal and professional goals. True happiness comes from the inside out, from a personal balance and from how you share it with the people around you, your family, friends, coworkers and community. Over time I’ve learned that happiness does not always means eternal laughs and having the best mood all the time, happiness is a state of balance... of being the best version of yourself every day, of working in your personal growth no matter how old you are or what you do, I’ve also learned that being happy is part of a process; you realize that you will always have problems and unpleasant situations, but it all depends in how you sort them, it’s more a state and a journey than a phisical reaction.

All these isolated sentences, came to my mind this week when I received these shoes... you can now picture my face when I received the UPS box: I shouted, clapped and jumped while my heart was beating like a jungle drum, after a few minutes I felt really ashamed for the show I've performed minutes earlier, I thought: I’m crazy! A few days later, my boyfriend received a box with tickets for World Cup matches, the reaction was almost the same as mine ... he almost cried with emotion, he couldn’t believe it! He finally was holding something he wished for and it seemed like something real, not a dream anymore; To be honest, seeing his reaction made me feel relieved and normal, sudenlly everything made sense to me, and I realized everyone has THAT special 'box', which makes you cry with excitement, jump, dream... In my case this time it was a pair of shoes, that represent many hours of work and effort to buy them - a dream come true- for him, the box had a pair of football tickets that also meant many years of savings and hard work. The box for someone else can represent an scholarship, the job her/his dream, or just a few more hours to spend with family, a special vacation, an anniversary or a personal or professional achievement. You probably think that my metaphor of ‘the box’ and the shoes is very shallow, but if you change perspective, it is not, the truth is that I have almost the same reaction every time I see my work published, or when I attend a friend’s wedding, or when I see my Mom happy, when I see my niece walk, laugh or talk, also when I receive emails from some of you telling me a story where somehow I helped you in something. In my life, there are many boxes still waiting to be delivered, but I work every day to get them, also many others that have reached their final destination and that I treasure and save, full of moments and situations, also of representative objects that excite and motivate me to be a better person, what about you?

With love,

Gina

Gina
