I've Got Nothing To Wear!

I’ve got nothing to wear!
Typical morning statement and to be honest it -really- doesn’t matter how many clothes we have, we always feel we have used everything: your mind closes, you colapse and you spend half an hour struggling with your wardrobe, you try-on all your clothes but nothing pleases you... it seems that everything that you have looks terrible (although it’s not true). The final result is a enormous pile of clothes over your bed that it's directly proportional to your bad mood, and you end up wearing the same exact outfit you wore a couple of weeks ago... but frustration doesn’t leave you, so as soon as possible you run to the nearest store and spend your monthly budget on clothes you really don’t need just for the relief/pleasure of ‘having more options’; am I wrong or what? The story doesn’t end here, because you end up having a full closet but you always end up matching the same pieces... it's a vicious circle: Been there, done that!

But, is there an actual solution to this ‘terrible’ problem?
The answer is yes! people, and after several years of research struggling with my own wardrobe, I’ve develop the following ‘five step solution’:

1. Seek for your wardrobe ‘happy hour’, this means take a couple of hours it works better if you are feeling relaxed and happy (Saturday mornings are a good target): Take out as many clothes as you can and start by mix matching them in different ways as you would do it on an average morning. The idea is to use your clothes in a different way, to add energy to your closet.

2. Now that you took everything out, take advantage and try on your clothes to find out which ones need to be adjusted or repaired, which ones need to be send to the trash can (or the moon if needed) and which ones need to be sold or transferred. A good idea to filter them is to think when was the last time you wore that particular piece, if you can’t remember or every time you take a look at it you let it pass... then it’s time to say good bye! This rule also applies to the -deer- Christmas sweater your uncle gave you during a family swap. You have three options to get rid of your ‘old’ clothes: organize an 'exchange' with friends and family, put them on sale to earn some money or donate them to charity (my personal favorite is the last one). But whatever you do, please don't go back to them, you will be fine... believe me.

3. With your (not brand) ‘new’ closet and practicing the new matches you made on step one, pull off as many different outfits as you can, if you don’t have a photographic memory then take some selfies with your cell-phone (just for the record, ok let's be honest probably many will end up on your FB wall). Seek for inspiration on blogs, pinterest and magazines (I’ve heard that the High On Fashion girl is really good... lol) it really helps to get ideas from others and adapt them to your personal style and possibilities.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Don’t be afraid to wear clothes you bought a couple of years ago, believe me if you know how to mix them they will look very updated... actually I do this a lot and you can clearly see I still wear pieces I wore on my first outfit posts (three years ago, time flies...). Thank God fashion now a days is very ‘friendly’, trends are quite ‘global’ so you can adapt them if needed, many pieces we bought a couple of years ago are still ‘good to go’ with the needed adjustments.

4. When you re-arrange all your clothes try to order them in a different way as they were before, this will give you the idea your closet is now full with brand new clothes, it will also open your mind.

5. Finally, when you are having the previously mentioned ‘I’ve got nothing to wear’ morning crisis, breath deeply, count to ten, relax and take a look at the pictures you took previously from the looks you set up and you will find peace in your heart!
Set up as many looks as possible (to suit different needs and situations) and every time you have time, ‘build’ more and more, this way you will build up an inventory and you will not end up buying stuff you don’t need.

....I wrote all this to tell you I turned my lovely RED Valentino dress into summer skirt just by putting it together with a denim shirt (actually you have already seen this dress a couple of months ago in this post) and as magic I ended up having a new piece and a totally new look for a different situation without spending a penny!

Have a great week!

With love,

Gina

PS. I leave you with this final picture as an ode to the previously described crisis ;)
