I think life is a box filled with surprises, and this story reminds what a lucky girl I am. Last year I went backpacking through Europe with one of my cousins. Our first stop was Madrid, then we went directly to Morocco, Italy and finally we visited France. The days we spent in Madrid were lovely; we ate lots of exquisite food, had sunny days and visited really cool places.
As the shoe-addict-with-no-intention-to-start-rehab that I am, I begged my cousin to go to the recently opened Christian Louboutin store, the first one that opened in Spain, with me (Louboutin is my favorite shoe designer). We spent four days in Madrid and all the touristy activities had gotten in the way of our search for the store (stubbornly I carried the printed address in my wallet just in case we were nearby at some point). Sadly our last day in Madrid, September 17th –almost exactly a year ago- arrived, and so my cousin (that isn’t a shoe fan nor a fashion junkie as I am) wanted to visit some more “cultural” places. On the other hand, all I wanted to do was go see all those amazing shoes together (I truly believe that some models are genuine pieces of art), and although I had already seen some pictures of the store online I wanted to experience the real thing: visit my first Louboutin Store.
After a lot of begging, my cousin accepted that our new mission would be to look for the store: Calle Claudio Coello # 13. After a thirty minute walk we finally found it. The place is really amazing, located on a very cute corner. As we entered I was filled with excitement: shoes placed in golden cages, in huge golden honeycombs, brilliant red carpet everywhere, golden curtains and all those amazing models hanging as pieces of art in a museum. Obviously I asked the sales lady if I could try on a pair, as I picked out some models a pretty glossy red pair caught my eye. They were perfect. The smell of those new shoes, of the leather, is something I will never forget. Every time I smell this particular scent (that might not be so appealing to others) I think of this day.
Long story short, that day was the grand opening of the store. Obviously I had no idea, but it was a private event that required personal invitation, very VIP. I noticed something was going on because when we arrived they were setting up the catering, and serving the champagne. I was like “wow, they even give you champagne if you shop here!” but the sales lady told me that the official opening was about to happen and that the one and only Christian Louboutin was going to be there. Imagine the look on my face… It’s a silly thing but I believe in destiny: I was in the right place, at the right time and with a little chance I was going to be able to meet him. I couldn’t believe what was happening, and then, as If things couldn’t get any better she told me “if you buy the shoes (the perfect red glossy ones) maybe he could sign them”. I stayed in silence for like a minute with my mouth opened so wide that it almost hit the floor. I spent almost all my shopping budget to buy the pair. We waited for like one hour (inside the store because as time passed the outside started getting packed), and then, HE arrived, wearing an amazing blue velvet coat, with a white shirt, a matching red and blue tie, and incredible navy blue moccasins with white pompons. There were lots of press, lots of VIP guests (all dressed up while I looked terribly ordinary, well nothing is perfect, right?) and lots of shoe fans screaming in the street.
After a while I was able to approach him. He kindly gave me a kiss, asked me how I was and If I liked his designs. For the first time in my life I was speechless. I only smiled, answered a few words and tried to tape the moment in my mind. He asked for a marker and signed my shoes “Pour Gina love C Louboutin”. I think I smiled for a week and now, once in a while I take them out from their perfect red velvet bag and admire them. They still smell fresh and leathery… just like that special day, obviously I haven´t worn them, and I decided that I never will. I am a really lucky girl with a really unique pair of red shoes.

Estoy convencida de que la vida es una caja llena de sorpresas, y esta historia solo me hace recordar lo afortunada que soy. El año pasado, me fuí a Europa de mochilazo con mi prima. Nuestra primer parada era Madrid, después Marruecos, Italia y por último Francia. Los días que pasamos en Madrid fueron increíbles: comida deliciosa, días soleados y lugares padrísimos para conocer.
Como una adicta a los zapatos -sin intención de ser rehabilitada- que soy le rogué a mi prima que fuéramos a la recién inaugurada tienda de Christian Louboutin, la cual era la primera en abrir en todo España (exactamente en Abril del 2010). Les tengo que decir, que Louboutin es mi diseñador de zapatos favorito, por eso mi insistencia. Ya llevábamos cuatro días en Madrid, y no habíamos tenido tiempo buscar la tienda, obviamente desde el día uno yo llevaba la dirección impresa en mi cartera por si en algún momento nos acercábamos al vecindario en donde se ubicaba. Ya era el último día, 17 de Septiembre para ser exacta –hace casi un año- y mi prima (que obviamente no es tan apasionada ni de la moda ni de los zapatos como yo) quería visitar lugares más culturales. Yo, en lo único que pensaba era en ver todos esos zapatos asombrosos juntos, para mí, algunos modelos son verdaderas obras de arte y aunque ya había visto fotos de la tienda en Internet, realmente quería tener la experiencia de visitar una tienda de Christian Louboutin por primera vez.
Después de rogar un poco, la convencí y nos dimos a la tarea de buscar la tienda ubicada en la Calle Claudio Coello # 13. Después de media hora de intensa búsqueda la encontramos. El lugar, como era de esperarse era fabuloso, ubicado en una esquina muy coqueta. Entramos y me emocioné, algunos zapatos estaban colocados en jaulas color oro, mientras que otros en un panal de abejas gigante -también dorado- que abarcaba toda la pared, alfombra rojo intenso en toda la tienda y cortinas doradas de terciopelo: los modelos exhibidos como obras de arte en un museo. Obviamente le pregunté a la vendedora si era posible probarme un par, así que elegí algunos, pero los que más llamaron mi atención fueron unos color rojo intenso, muy brillantes y de tacón gigante
–muy Louboutin- eran pefectos… el olor a zapatos nuevos es algo que jamás olvidaré y cada que huelo este peculiar aroma (que para algunos no es ni tan notorio, ni tan atractivo) me acuerdo de ese momento tan especial.
Para no extenderme más en esta historia, resulta que ese día era la gran inauguración, obviamente yo ni idea porque era un evento privado además de ser sumamente exclusivo, celebridades y socialités españolas se darían cita. Me di cuenta porque había champagne y bocadillos, y pensé “Wow, creo que esta tienda es tan elegante que hasta champagne te dan al comprar” Pero la vendedora fue la que me comentó que era porque sería la inauguración y que el mismísimo Christian Louboutin asistiría. Imaginen mi cara cuando me dijo esto. Yo creo en el destino: para mi buena suerte estaba en el lugar correcto, a la hora adecuada y con un poco de suerte podría conocerlo. No podía creer lo que me estaba sucediendo. Después, como si la situación no fuese lo suficientemente buena, me dijo “es más, si compras algún par podrías esperarte y probablemente él te los pueda autografiar” Creo que me quedé en silencio como por un minuto con la boca casi en el piso. Me gasté casi todo el presupuesto que tenía destinado para mis compras en ese par de zapatos, de lo cual, no me arrepiento para nada. Esperamos un poco más de una hora dentro de la tienda, porque conforme pasaban los minutos celebridades iban llegando y el lugar se ponía a reventar. Por fin ÉL llegó, usando un saco de terciopelo azul marino, camisa blanca y corbata a juego –azul y roja- unos mocasines increíbles de color azul marino con unas motas blancas que caían a los lados. Mucha prensa, mucha gente VIP (todos luciendo realmente fashion y yo, muy ordinaria pero bueno nada es perfecto ¿cierto?) Ya se imaginarán a todas las mujeres en la calle gritando… todo un espectáculo.
Después de un tiempo, tuve oportunidad de acercarme a él y muy amablemente me saludó, me dio un beso y me preguntó si me gustaban sus diseños, y yo, que con trabajos podía articular pensamientos por primera vez en mi vida no podía ni hablar, solo sonreía y contestaba lo que podía –realmente trataba de grabar ese momento en mi memoria- Pidió un plumón y firmó mis zapatos “Pour Gina love C Louboutin”. Creo que tuve una sonrisa permanente durante una semana –a la fecha no creo la suerte que tuve- De vez en cuando, saco este hermoso par de zapatos de su muy roja y aterciopelada bolsa para verlo. Aún huelen como ese día, lo cual me hace revivir mi maravillosa experiencia… obviamente jamás los he usado y decidí que jamás lo haré. Me considero una mujer muy afortunada con un par de zapatos rojos realmente únicos.
